Crabgrass (Digitaria sanguinalis)

Email

  • Title:  Crabgrass (Digitaria sanguinalis)
  • Description:  Crabgrass (Digitaria sanguinalis). Aggressive and difficult to eradicate, crabgrass spreads by seeds and also by stem nodes that can root and produce new stems wherever a stem touches soil. It thrives in hot moist conditions. Drought hardly fazes this summer annual weed. Each weed can produce up to 150,000 seeds annually, viable for three years. Seed heads are in spikes up to 5 inches long. Seed germination begins in early spring, continuing in summer. To prevent new infestations, stop crabgrass seeds from rooting with a pre-emergent such as Preen or Preen Southern. To deal with existing weeds, either dig them out or spot treat with a post-emergent spray.
