Attention rose lovers: 2010 is the year of David Austin! At least, so say The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens in San Marino, CA, and New York’s Manhattan Rose Society, co-sponsors of the "Great Rosarians of the World"™ lecture series presented in January and June each year. The famed British hybridizer of English Garden roses has been named the lecture series’ 2010 honoree. Now in its tenth year, the bi-coastal event is designed to recognize those who have contributed significantly to the rose world.

“It was roses like ‘Graham Thomas’, ‘Mary Rose’, and ‘Abraham Darby’ that launched David Austin onto the world stage,” said Mr. Clair Martin, Shannon Curator of Rose Collections at The Huntington Botanical Gardens and event organizer. “Now, nearly a half-century later his English Garden Roses are popular worldwide for their contribution to garden landscaping as well to the rose garden.”

Mr. Michael Marriott, technical manager of David Austin Roses Ltd., gave the West Coast keynote lecture on January 24 on Mr. Austin’s behalf. Mr. Marriott described Mr. Austin’s passion for creating exquisite, new garden rose hybrids: “Mr. Austin believes, above all, that an English Garden Rose must have a bush equal in beauty to its flowers and be a vigorous performer in the garden. A lovely fragrance is vital, not optional, it’s the soul of a proper English Rose.”

In addition to the Marriott lecture, visitors to the two-day Huntington event enjoyed a videotaped interview with Mr. Austin conducted by Clair Martin on a visit to the famous David Austin Rose Gardens at Albrighton, England. Other attractions were displays of rose-themed fine-art photography and fragrant oils and fragrances made with roses.

June 11 – 13, the Manhattan Rose Society hosts the East Coast “Great Rosarians of the World” program at The New York Botanical Garden. This event also honors David Austin and features the work of artist Maria Cecilia Freeman and the unveiling of a new, revised and enlarged edition of the “The Sustainable Rose Garden Reader.”

In a separate award, the David Austin Rose Garden, a two-acre garden adjacent to the Austin nurseries in Albrighton, England was inducted into the GROW™ Rose Garden Hall of Fame. The David Austin Rose Gardens were recognized for their outstanding display of English and Antique roses. Said Clair Martin, “David Austin’s Renaissance Garden is without a doubt one of the splendors of the rose world when in full bloom.”
