Daffodils are infectious. One family plants bulbs in fall, and the spring blooms inspire the neighbors to plant some, too. Sometimes whole towns fall for daffodils. South Salem, New York, is one. Over the past decade, the Lewisboro Garden Club and community volunteers have planted more than 38,000 daffodils along area roadsides. Inspired by their efforts, local homeowners have planted an additional 38,000 of the same blend in high-profile areas of their own properties.

George Scott, founder and longtime chairman of the LGC’s Golden Roads committee shares tips gleaned from the program's long experience.

When choosing flower bulbs to plant this fall, consider something old that’s new again: multi-flowering hyacinths. Nouvelle Orleans Hyacinth Blend from Colorblends brings back the loose, relaxed look of the hyacinths of long ago. Introduced in 2016, the blend is already a favorite of Fairfield, Connecticut, landscape architect Eva Chiamulera. A related short video is available on Colorblends YouTube Channel (00:42 minute).

Screen Out Bulb-Stealing Squirrels

- 280 words
Where squirrels are a problem, tulip and crocus lovers in particular seek ways to dissuade digging paws. Covering beds with cut-to-size chicken wire is often the choice for high-profile plantings. Master gardener Sally Ferguson favors a simpler approach. “Use adjustable window screens, the cheaper the better." A related short video is available on the Colorblends YouTube Channel (1:37 minutes).
